Vitoria (Esporte Clube Vitória)

Esporte Clube Vitória are based in Salavdor , in the State of Bahia , north-east Brazil.

The club is one of the oldest in Brazil being founded in 1899. The idea for the club came about because two members of the same family (brothers) went to study in England, upon their return they founded Victoria Cricket Club – which morphed into the football club. And the English word Victoria was also changed to the Portuguese; Vitoria.

The club mascot is a lion which is used to motivate the fans and players and in all fairness the lion must have had a positive effect in 2007 as Vitoria were promoted to Serie A for the 2008 season.

However, Vitoria football club have never won a Brazilian Championship, though they have managed to win no less than 24 Bahia State Championships.

They play in Salvador at Estádio Manoel Barradas (Barradão) , and actually own the ground and lease it out frequently for other sporting and non-sporting events.

The club has 3 main organized supporter groups;  Jovem Rubro-Negro, Os Imbateveis and Leoes da Fiel.

Most Interestingly, Vitoria’s first real competitive football match was against the English crews of ships berthed at the docks in Salvador, in an apparent thriller, Vitoria triumphed 3-2. This win only served to speed up the movement from a primarily cricket club to a football club.

The club finances is managed by a Brazilian Incorporated Company which manages and makes investments on behalf of the football club. They recently added a new training complex facility to the grounds, in addition to making substantial improvements to the main stadium – this now sets them up nicely to become one of the chosen venues for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
