Vasco (Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama)

Vasco de Gama football club is based in Rio de Janeiro - it is amongst the oldest and most traditional football clubs in Brazil; founded by the Rio Portuguese community.

As the club's official name in Portuguese implies; Regatas Vasco da Gama , it was originally a rowing club (familiar story wit many Brazilian football teams).

Vasco have been relatively successful as a football club and have won the 2 most important South American Competitions, as in Mercosur and Libertadores, moreover, have won 4 Brazilian Championships too.

They play at São Januário stadium, although the big Rio games are played at the famous Maracana Stadium - Vasco enjoy support from all over Brazil, and the derby games against Flamengo are especially well fought and supported affairs.

As is usual they have elite or Ultra groups of fans, about 8 or 9 main fan groups, the biggest of which are; Força Jovem Vasco , Mancha Negro Vasco, Kamikazes Vascaínos and  Organizada do Vasco.

As an aside the club takes it's name from the Portuguese explorer (of course of the same name) who was the first Portuguese Naval Commander to sail from Europe to India.

Also worth noting is the fact that Vasco as a sports club produce some great basketball players , some of whom play regularly in North American Leagues.
