Santos (Santos Futebol Clube)

Santos are one of the most famous football clubs in Brazil – not least because the greatest ever footballer graced the team sheet; Pele, was one of a handful of players who contributed to Santos football club glory years.

Santos is a port in Sao Paulo which has immense significance for Brazil , it is in fact the largest port in Latin America and quite probably one of the most important ports in the world.

Santos itself has a population of about half-million people , whilst the greater area 3 times that.

Pele joined Santos at 15 years old and remained with them for 17 years.

Quite confusingly the club nickname is Peixe (fish),  although the club mascot is in fact a whale, and Santos supporters are called , Santistas.

The football club has enjoyed quite considerable success bagging 2 Intercontinental Cups, 2 Libertadores, the South American Supercup, the CONMEBOL and 2 Brazilian Championships.

They play at Urbano Caldeira (Estádio Vila Belmiro) which has most recently been graced with Robinho who in 2002, signed professionally with the club and led them to the Brazilian Championship the same year. They won it again 2 years later, but unfortunately for Santos,  Real Madrid prized away their greatest asset – However, they have been performing reasonably well of late, and should finish in the top 8 this year (2008).
