Portuguesa (Associação Portuguesa de Desportos)

Portuguesa, or Lusa, play out of Sao Paulo, you won't be falling off your chair in surprise when I tell you that they were initiated by the Portuguese community in Sao Paulo.
It was 1n 1920 when they decided to kit out a new football club in the green and red of the mother country.
They play at Estádio do Canindé, which they purchased from Sao Paulo football club, or more correctly, it was more or less a plot of land with training facility buidings on it - it was Portuguesa who improved the plot and built the stadium.
As one would expect most things about the traditions of the club has Portuguese connotation, from the sheild on the kit and other merchandise to the anthem. Even the original mascot was a Portuguese girl, called Severa, named after; Dima Tereza, a most fanous fado musician/singer.
Portuguesa have not set Sao Paulo or Brazil alight with their footballing greatness, which is borne out by the fact that they haven't won any national championships, and have only bagged a handfull of minor state trophies. Although, in saying that, it a good achievement to be playing in Serie A - hopefully they may remain there for 2009.
