Palmeiras (Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras)

Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras are a São Paulo based football team with distinct and umistakable Italian roots.

And just like Cruzeiro football club, in 1942, had to have a name change as Brazil entered World War Two on the side of the allies.

Palmeiras have had pretty decent success in Brazilian domestic football with an octet of major trophies (4 times Brazilian Champions, Serie A/First Division, and 4 assorted National Cups), and have triumphed in the State Championship no less than 22 times, to boot!

Felipe Scolari (also Italian descent) led them to their greatest victory in the 1999 Copa Libertadores when they defeated Colombian outfit, Deportivo Cali.

No surprise to learn that they play their home games at the ; Estádio Palestra Itália, and have had some very memorable conteat there, both defeats and victories.

All other Sao Paulo clubs are rivals , but their most intense rivalry is with Corinthians, and quite interestingly there is a film which weaves this rivalry into the plot;  O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta (The Marriage of Romeo and Juliet) depicts Juliet as the daughter of Palmeiras club officials and Romeo as a die-hard Corinthian fan.The club plays in a green and white strip and officially has a Parakeet as their mascot, but unofficially it’s a Pig, much to the delight of rival supporters who use all possible negative connotations regarding the pig to regularly taunt them.
