Ipatinga (Ipatinga Futebol Clube)

Ipatinga are based in the city of the same name in Eastern  Brazil , the State is Minas Gerais, Minas Gerais is famed for it’s minerals and has Brazil’s biggest steel making plant in it’s territory.

Ipatinga football club is a relatively new club, and wasn’t founded until 1998 and since 2006 have gained promotion each year; firstly from Serie C into Serie B, and on the back of a Serie B runner-up spot in 2007 were promoted to the primary Brazilian Football League/ Serie A.

This is a remarkable achievement for a new club, and we just have to wait and see how they cope with the top flight.

They play at Estádio Municipal Epaminondas Mendes Brito, but if you find that a rather large mouthful you may shorten it to; Ipatingão.

In keeping with Brazil’s eccentricity of choosing mascots and emblems for their football clubs, a democratic vote yielded a tiger as the chosen symbol, unfortunately, the parrot, parakeet, cat and eagle were humbly defeated.

They have achieved regional success in winning the State Championship in addition to bagging the State Cup, and actually accomplished a 3rd spot in the National, Copa do Brasil.

Their kit is green and white alternating between white shirt and green shorts at home, and green shirt and white shorts away. (sometimes however, they wear an all green strip, as above).

I guess all eyes are watching how they do in their first big 2008 test dancing with the elite – good luck to Ipatinga!
