Internacional (Sport Club Internacional)

Sport Club Internacional, or simply, Internacional, play out of Porto Alegre in South Brazil. They are one of two Serie A football clubs in the city, the other being great rivals; Gremio.
Internacional has a very interesting history. They were founded in 1909 by 3 members of the same family.
Luis, Jose and Henrique Poppe originally came from Sao Paulo, they moved to Porto Alegre a couple of years before founding the club. Porto Alegre already had a professional football team in the shape of Gremio, and for whatever reason , the 3 Poppe boys were ¨blackballed¨, as it were, and not welcomed at Gremio football club.
The boys were football mad and were not put off by this snub, and consequently formed a new football team – Internacional were born!
The 1940s were a great decade for Internacional, and is today referred to as ¨The Steamroller¨ years , one of the reasons for this great decade was the fact that , Internacional had (10 or so years earlier) allowed black players into the team. This was quite an unprecedented move at the time, and certainly contributed to their success

It is fair to say that on the world footballing stage, Internacional are the most successful Brazilian football club – this can not be disputed, moreover, their record of achievements speaks for itself.; 1982 saw them winning the Joan Gamper tournament, in 86 they were crowned South American Champions by winning the Copa Libertadores. That fine Libertadores win gave them entry in to the FIFA World Club Championships and quite astonishingly were then crowned World Club Champions by beating the mighty Barcelona in the final. But there’s more, they followed this remarkable win , with a 2007 ,Recopa Sudamericana title – So yes, you must agree, Internacional are the most successful Brazilian football club – at least on the world stage!
