Goiás (Goiás Esporte Clube)

Goiás Esporte Clube play out of the State of the same name (located in Central-West Brazil), in the city of Goiânia. Goiânia is the State capital and has a broad population of over 2 million people. It is a relatively new city, only being built in the 1930s. The new city was built for both economic and political issues and I suppose it’s fitting that the premier state football club is also based there.
Goias haven’t really got any serious local football rivals and this affords them the luxury of garnering most of the regional support. However, they have never won a National Championship at the highest level, although they did win a Serie B title in 1999, moreover, they were beaten finalists in the 1990 Copa do Brasil.
Indeed, they were very fortunate to avoid the drop into Serie B last season (2007), and survived by virtue of one place (they finished 16th of 20).

They have a small capacity stadium; Estádio da Serrinha can only house 10,000 fans, but when the need arises they switch venues and play at the larger; Estádio Serra Dourada. Serra Dourada is state owned and consequently shared by the lesser local footballing lights, primarily, Vila Nova Futebol Clube, who in 2008 play in Serie B thanks to a 3rd spot finish in Serie C in 2007.
Goias have 3 major fan associations; Força Jovem Goiás , Inferno Verde and Piriquitões da Net.
