Fluminense Football Club Rio de Janeiro

Fluminense is one of the oldest Football Clubs in Brazil – and one of the major football teams to play out of Rio de Janeiro.

The club was founded in 1902 by the son of a British Diplomat; Oscar Cox, whose father , George was the President of a Rio Cricket Club. Oscar Cox not only founded Fluminense Football club, but is also credited with introducing football to Rio de Janeiro.

They have a huge fan and membership base and the supporters are called tricolores, three-colours , on account of the teams, Claret , white and green kit.

The fan base is interesting, and is a pattern very much followed throughout Brazil, if you have read the other Brazilian football teams profiles you would now know that football in Brazil used to be a middle and upper-class game. No surprise then that Fluminense’s main support is traditionally drawn from the middle classes, whilst it’s rival , Flamengo enjoys the support of the Rio de Janeiro masses.

Perhaps surprisingly, they have only managed to win one Brazilian Championship, but have won 3 Brazilian Cups in addition to 30 State Championships.

They play at the Maracana stadium and when playing against Flamengo they have attracted crowds nearing 200,000 fans. They are currently sponsored by Adidias and the Brazilian medical insurance company; Unimed.

They are expected to and ought to finish in the top 10 in 2008 Serie A
