Flamengo Football Club (Clube de Regatas do Flamengo)

The Scarlet and Black's, otherwise known as Flamengo , are one of the biggest football clubs in Brazil. Flamengo are easily the most supported Brazilian soccer team and draws it's fans from all over this huge country. Flamengo is yet another Brazilian club which started life as a rowing club. Moreover, it was a pretty elite rowing club, attracting Rio de Janeiro's high society.

 

    

Flamengo hold the distinction of having never ben demoted from the Brazilian first division/Serie A.

Their home ground is a very small stadium , called; Gavea, however, most of the world associates them with the Maracana stadium, and quite rightly so as, today, this is where they play most of their home games.

  

Flamengo are one of Brazil's most successful football teams, having won the Brazilian Championship no less than , 5 times, in addition to International honours, including the Intercontinental, Libertadores, Mercosur and Conmebol Cups. Not only that, they have won the Rio de Janeiro State Championships an amazing, 30 times. 

Flamengo are are a very stable football club and have been sponsored long term by the Brazilian petroleum company; Petrobras. Another point worth noting is the fan base, fans are called; torcidas in Portuguese, and Flamengo have some of the most active fan clubs in Brazil - some of whom are known as quite notorious and fanatical supporters, such as the Raça Rubro-Negra, Torcida Jovem-Fla and the Dragões.And finally, an interesting aside regarding the history and formation of Flamengo is due to the fact that some players from Rio rivals ; Fluminense. had a rather acrimonious parting, and joined , what was then the rowing club; Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, the small group of ex-Fluminense players initiated a football section - the rest, as they say, is history.
