Coritiba Football Club

Coritiba Football Club are great rivals of Atletico Paranaense , both based in Parana State, South Brazil.

Coritiba was initiated by German immigrants from the city of Curitiba – this is hardly surprising as thousands of German and Italian immigrants came to Brazil and for the most part settled in the south; largely in Parana.

And most interestingly, whilst many football clubs in Brazil sprung from rowing clubs, Coritiba was borne from a gymnastics association who in fact played their first competitive game against a team of English railway workers.

At this juncture, if you have read the profile of some of the other teams in Serie A, you would have recognized a distinct pattern emerging of football clubs in Brazil mostly being founded by or with great influence, largely, English (or more correctly, British), but other European countries played their part too.

Back in 1985 ,Coritiba reached the dizzy heights of a National Championship, but unfortunately suffered some setbacks after that, save winning a few State Championship titles – Perhaps times they areas thanks to a Serie B championship win in 2007 they find themselves playing with the big boys again. In typical Brazilian style, they have an odd mascot in the shape of an old man, called,  Vovô Coxa (Vovô is Grandpa in Portuguese), and most confusingly have 3 anthems. Idiosyncrasies aside, they look set to do well in Serie A 2008, and ought to remain there for 2009.
